NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Minibus drivers in eastern Nairobi appear to be heeding a gang threat to behead anyone who defies orders to stay off the roads.
Commuters are trekking dozens of miles into downtown Nairobi with minibuses stalled for a second day in Kenya's tense capital. Throngs of people filled the roads early Wednesday morning as minibus operators locally known as "matatus" stayed off the streets out of fear.
A criminal gang called the Mungiki warned a day earlier that they would behead all drivers, conductors and passengers who violate their "orders" to stay off roads. Nairobi police officer Julius Nuthuri says two people were slightly injured overnight in an apparent attack on a matatu.

We've all been and we may be a family of adults... but we'd like to travel and work in Kenya again, together.
The news that flows from the country continues to be filled with chaos, anger and violence. In our work over the years, we'd heard of the Mungiki. I'd asked lot's of questions... the kind an outsider ask when something sounds so strange... in general, people didn't want to talk about the group. Dominated by one tribe. More of a "secret society" than a gang of criminals wandering through the cities. "Dirty work" often accomplished by people living in poverty, desperate, hungry, hired for very little and used to instill fear.
Imagine the KKK in the early 1900's without the hoods to identify them. They were frightening enough to shut down entire regions, control political parties and direct family and church values of a large nation like the US. What if the KKK had the use of email, cell phones with cameras? A digital world to hold a grudge and threaten a millions... ? It's happening in Kenya today.
Commerce surrounding Nairobi and many other cities has come to a halt, is being held hostage... in the aftermath of months of political violence and death, we can't begin to imagine the grip of fear that holds a nation.
Even still, we want to return.
Matatu drivers have parked their vans... mourning again, the loss of income. People are walking miles to get to the market, to work, school... to life. Deep in many of the villages we've worked in; no one reads a newspaper, there's no TV, no matatu's cruise their dirt roads... and yet friend's from the states, from Europe, new friends with new promises, fail to return... the commerce of the village community continues without the influence, for good and bad, of those who would come to serve.
It's easy to give advice from 12,000 miles away... safe in California... I've got no desire to enter the fear, the violence, to take my family into the horror stories I've heard from friends when they've returned... yet there's something that draws me still- I have to get a blood test for Malaria today -to find out if it's in my system. I don't have to be tested for Kenya. It's definitely in my blood. God's called us. We can wait until He opens the door, if He opens the door again... until then, we want to return, all of us, together. There's consensus. It's a family thing.
Continue to pray for Kenya. I open my email each morning waiting for good news. I know it's coming.
